~~ My Process & Design ~~
I make every yunomi in my home studio on the potter's wheel, trimming the bottom foot as soon as the rim is stable.
• Material: Crafted from rustic blue stoneware clay.
• The Pattern Technique: I apply a custom, hand-drawn and digitized geometric stencil to layout the design, layering colored slips before hand-carving away incomplete shapes for crisp, clean lines.
• Color & Wash Effects: A vibrant blue slip is applied to the interior. After the first firing, a black wash is applied to the exterior and wiped back, allowing dark accents to settle beautifully into the crevices of the pattern and trimming lines.
• Glaze & Firing: Finished with a clear glaze on the inside and high-fired in an electric oxidation kiln.
• Hand-Sanded Finish: The outside of the yunomi is wet-sanded by hand both before and after the final glaze firing to ensure a super-smooth, touchable raw clay finish.
